DIAGNOdent in Marinette, WI

DIAGNOdent is a dental diagnostic tool that detects dental caries (cavities) in the early stages. It is a portable device that employs laser fluorescence technology to identify demineralization and tooth decay areas. At Valenta Dental, we use DIAGNOdent primarily to aid in the early detection of dental caries before they become visible or detectable by traditional examination methods such as visual inspection or dental X-rays. By identifying early signs of tooth decay, our dentist can intervene promptly and implement preventive measures or conservative treatment options to prevent further progression of the cavities.

The DIAGNOdent device operates based on the principle that healthy tooth structure emits less laser fluorescence, while areas with demineralization or caries exhibit higher fluorescence levels.

How Does the DIAGNOdent System Work?

Laser Probe

The DIAGNOdent device has a handheld probe emitting a safe, low-intensity laser beam.

Laser Scanning

The dentist or dental professional directs the laser probe onto the tooth surfaces, scanning each tooth individually. The laser beam penetrates the tooth structure and interacts with the tooth's mineral content.

Fluorescence Measurement

As the laser beam interacts with the tooth, it causes fluorescence reactions within the tooth structure. Healthy tooth structure emits minimal fluorescence, while areas affected by tooth decay exhibit different fluorescence patterns.

Decay Detection

The DIAGNOdent system identifies and alerts our dentist to areas of potential decay. The higher the numerical reading, the more significant the degree of decay or demineralization in the tooth.

The Benefits of the DIAGNOdent System

Early Detection

DIAGNOdent can detect early-stage tooth decay that may neither be visible to the naked eye nor detectable with traditional dental instruments. This allows for prompt intervention and treatment, potentially preventing further progression of the decay.

Accuracy

The laser fluorescence technology used by DIAGNOdent provides objective and consistent measurements, reducing the subjective nature of visual examinations. It can help distinguish between active carious lesions and non-carious enamel changes, aiding in accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.

Minimally Invasive

By detecting caries at an early stage, DIAGNOdent facilitates minimally invasive treatment approaches. Early intervention may allow for more conservative restorative procedures, such as dental sealants or preventive measures, rather than extensive restorations.

Monitoring Progression

DIAGNOdent can be used to monitor the progression of tooth decay over time. Dentists can track changes by periodically assessing the fluorescence measurements and determining the effectiveness of preventive measures or treatment interventions.

DIAGNOdent is a diagnostic aid and should be used with other clinical assessments, including visual examinations, dental radiographs (X-rays), and patient history, to form a comprehensive diagnosis and treatment plan.
